Forklift trucks are indispensable in many industries, including manufacturing, warehousing, and construction. However, their operation poses significant risks if proper safety practices are not followed. Every year, National Forklift Safety Day serves as a crucial reminder of the importance of safety protocols and training in workplaces that utilise forklifts.

This year, National Forklift Safety Day (NFSD) 2024, organised by the UK Material Handling Association (UKMHA), is set to take place with the theme “Prevent – Manage – Learn” with the initiative spanning from June 11 to December 9, focusing on the comprehensive management of forklift incidents through a detailed seven-stage cycle. This extended campaign format underscores the commitment to making every day a National Forklift Safety Day by continually emphasising safety practices and learning opportunities.

Key Messages and Stages of NFSD 2024
The campaign is structured around the following seven stages, each highlighting critical aspects of forklift safety:

Prepare (June 11): Focuses on proactive measures to prevent incidents.

Respond (July 10): Outlines immediate actions to take following an incident.

Investigate (August 8): Guides on conducting thorough investigations to determine the root causes of incidents.

Report (September 13): Covers legal and procedural requirements for reporting incidents.

Restart (October 12): Details the steps necessary to safely resume operations post-incident.

Learn (November 10): Stresses the importance of learning from past incidents to prevent future occurrences.

Prevent (December 9): Concludes with strategies to prevent incidents, emphasising ongoing vigilance and safety culture.

Importance of Continuous Safety Education
The NFSD 2024 campaign is designed to provide a continuous stream of educational content, resources, and practical guidelines to help companies and their employees stay informed and prepared. By spreading the campaign over several months, the UKMHA aims to embed safety deeply into the operational culture of businesses, ensuring that safety is not just a one-day focus but a daily practice.

David Goss, the Technical Director of UKMHA, highlighted the campaign’s goal:

“With the theme ‘Prevent – Manage – Learn’, this year’s National Forklift Safety Day will adopt a different format from previous campaigns. Rather than taking place on a single day, National Forklift Safety Day 2024 will be extended over different days across a seven-month period, as we aim to make every day National Forklift Safety Day”.

How to Get Involved
Businesses and individuals can participate by engaging with the campaign’s content, attending events, and promoting safety messages on social media using the hashtag #NationalForkliftSafetyDay. This collaborative effort can help foster a safer working environment across the material handling industry.

Pallet racking systems are essential for efficient warehouse operations, providing storage solutions for goods and materials. However, ensuring the safety and structural integrity of these systems is paramount to prevent accidents and maintain productivity. One of the key ways to achieve this is through regular inspections, with the SEMA (Storage Equipment Manufacturers’ Association) guidelines playing a crucial role in setting industry standards.

Understanding SEMA Pallet Racking Inspections
SEMA, a leading authority in storage equipment safety, has established guidelines for the inspection of pallet racking systems. These guidelines outline best practices for inspecting and maintaining racking structures, ensuring they meet safety standards and regulations.

Importance of Inspections
1. Safety Compliance: Regular inspections help warehouse operators comply with Health and Safety regulations. By identifying and addressing potential issues early, inspections reduce the risk of accidents and injuries. Pallet racking is classed as work equipment and therefore comes under the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER).
2. Preventative Maintenance: Inspections are not just about identifying existing problems; they also help prevent future issues. Detecting signs of wear, damage, or overloading early allows for timely repairs and replacements, thereby extending the life of the racking system.
3. Optimising Operations: Well-maintained racking systems contribute to efficient warehouse operations. By ensuring that racks are structurally sound and properly configured, inspections help maximize storage capacity and streamline inventory management.

Key Components of SEMA Pallet Racking Inspections
1. Initial Inspection: New racking systems should undergo a thorough inspection upon installation to confirm compliance with SEMA guidelines and manufacturer specifications.
2. Regular Scheduled Inspections: Routine inspections should be conducted periodically (typically annually) by competent personnel trained in SEMA guidelines. These inspections involve a detailed assessment of the racking system’s components, including frames, beams, braces, and fixings.
3. Damage Assessment: Inspectors look for signs of damage such as dents, bends, and corrosion. They assess the impact of any damage on the structural integrity and load-bearing capacity of the racking.
4. Load Capacity Checks: Ensuring that racks are not overloaded is crucial for safety. Inspectors verify load capacities against original design specifications.
5. Documentation and Reporting: Inspection findings are documented and, utilising a traffic light system, detail any issues identified and recommended actions. This documentation serves as a record of compliance and aids in tracking maintenance history.

Compliance and Best Practices
Warehouse operators should prioritise compliance with SEMA guidelines for pallet racking inspections. This involves:
• Training: Ensuring that personnel conducting inspections are adequately trained and competent in SEMA guidelines.
• Regular Maintenance: Implementing a maintenance schedule based on inspection findings to address identified issues promptly.
• Emergency Response: Having protocols in place for responding to critical issues, such as damaged or collapsed racks, to minimise downtime and ensure worker safety.

By ensuring that maintenance is performed by competent personnel, repair times are significantly reduced, allowing your warehouse to run at its best capacity.

Conclusion
In conclusion, SEMA pallet racking inspections are a critical component of warehouse safety and operational efficiency. By adhering to SEMA guidelines and conducting regular inspections, warehouse operators can mitigate risks, prolong the lifespan of their racking systems, and maintain a safe working environment for employees. Prioritising safety through inspections is not just a regulatory requirement; it’s a fundamental practice that supports the success and sustainability of warehouse operations.

Many users of LPG forklift trucks may already be aware of the current issues surrounding the supply of contaminated LPG within the UK. The HSE are currently investigating this issue and the UK Material Handling Association have recently updated their Safety Alert in relation to the operation of LPG forklift trucks, irrespective of the manufacturer.

The use of contaminated fuel can cause blocked vaporisers and sticking valves which will result in the truck not starting. Repeated attempts at starting can release unburned LPG which presents a fire risk. If the engine of an LPG truck does not start within the normal few seconds, please adhere to the following guidance:

Do NOT continue to crank the engine over

Do NOT repeat the normal engine starting procedure

Do NOT spray volatile agents into the air intake in an attempt to aid starting

Do NOT apply shock or heat in an attempt to free the system

Secure the truck against further starting attempts

Close the shut-off valve on the gas bottle

Ensure the area is well ventilated

Contact CMH and request a check of the LPG system on your truck.

The full Safety Alert issued by the UKMHA can be downloaded here.
