Many users of LPG forklift trucks may already be aware of the current issues surrounding the supply of contaminated LPG within the UK.  The HSE are currently investigating this issue and the UK Material Handling Association have recently updated their Safety Alert in relation to the operation of LPG forklift trucks, irrespective of the manufacturer.

The use of contaminated fuel can cause blocked vaporisers and sticking valves which will result in the truck not starting.  Repeated attempts at starting can release unburned LPG which presents a fire risk.  If the engine of an LPG truck does not start within the normal few seconds, please adhere to the following guidance:

• Do NOT continue to crank the engine over
• Do NOT repeat the normal engine starting procedure
• Do NOT spray volatile agents into the air intake in an attempt to aid starting
• Do NOT apply shock or heat in an attempt to free the system
• Secure the truck against further starting attempts
• Close the shut-off valve on the gas bottle
• Ensure the area is well ventilated
• Contact CMH and request a check of the LPG system on your truck.
